Bernard Solack, 91 of Luzerne passed away peacefully at home on May 25, 2024. He was the loving husband of Joan Barilla Solack. Bernie and Joan just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in April.
Born August 18, 1932 he was the son of the late Ignatius and Sophia Wojcik Solack. He was a 1951 graduate of Marymount High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and later was stationed at the 7th Army Headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Luzerne and was formerly employed at Procter and Gamble in Mehoopany for 28 years. Bernie was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3987 in Luzerne. For many years he organized the grade school basketball tournaments and was on the traveling dart team.
He was a former member of the Shur Shot Hunting Club and a life member of the American Legion, Post 644, Swoyersville. He also belonged to the Polish American Veterans (PAV) in Plains where he played in the Pitch League. Bernie was an active member of Odyssey Fitness Club. Furthermore he was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was an enthusiast of high school and college basketball, the NFL and MLB. His favorite teams were Bishop O’Reilly, Gonzaga, Penn State, Patriots and the Phillies. He loved Polka music, going to Polka weekends, cruises, Atlantic City and Wildwood. He cherished his Sunday evenings with his wife Joan at the Mohegan Sun Casino.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be missed dearly by all. He cherished every moment he spent with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn (Joseph) Ustupski and brother in law Raymond Godlewski.
Surviving are his loving wife, Joan Barilla Solack; children, Bernard (Karen) Solack, West Wyoming, Karen Shatrowskas, Wyoming, Richard (Joan) Solack, Shavertown; grandchildren, Bernard (Nicole) Solack, Samantha Solack, Kasey (Gary) Seman, Allyson Shatrowskas, Melissa Solack, Elisabeth Azarewicz and twins Ashley and Aubrey Solack; great grandchildren, Jacob, Danika and Nolan Solack, Emmie Seman; sibilings Anthony and Geraldine Solack, Barbara Godlewski, Josephine and Lawrence Yale, Patricia and Michael Boncheck; many nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 9.30 a.m. from Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, 568 Bennett Street, Luzerne with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 in Holy Family Parish. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.
