Janice K. Sweetra

April 27, 1955 — June 18, 2024

Janice K. Sweetra, 69, of Shavertown passed away peacefully Tuesday evening at her home after a bravely fought battle with cancer.


Born in Methuen, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late John and Geraldine (Prall) Zemis. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne.


She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Salem State University. Before her retirement she was employed by Highmark Health in Wilkes-Barre for 25 years, most recently as a Training Supervisor.


Janice was a very special and beautiful person. Her greatest joy in life was loving and caring for her family. She had the biggest heart and shared every ounce of her love with her family. She especially enjoyed family vacations to the beach, biking and walking with her husband.


She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Steven.


Surviving are Raymond J. Sweetra, her loving husband of 35 years; daughter, Rebecca Szot and husband Mark, Shavertown; brothers John Zemis and wife Deborah, Massachusetts; Dr. Joseph Zemis and wife Kristin, Ohio; sisters Clare Igoe and husband John, New Hampshire; Geraldine Mandry and husband James, Massachusetts and numerous nieces and nephews.


The funeral will be Tuesday at 9.30 a.m. from Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, 568 Bennett Street, Luzerne with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 in Holy Family Parish. Interment will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Lehman. Friends may visit Monday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Condolences can be sent to: betzjastremski.com.
