John D. Check Jr., “Jabber”, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026 at the age of 90.

Born August 25, 1935 in Wilkes Barre, to John D. and Sophia Check, he grew up in the North End section of Wilkes-Barre and graduated from Coughlin High School in 1953.  Soon after he would be drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed overseas in Germany. He even tried out for and made the Army Football Team.

After John was discharged honorably, he married Ellen Horensky on January 31, 1965 and together they raised two children Daniel J. and David M.  John and Ellen celebrated their most recent 61 year anniversary this year.  The couple resided for many years in Kingston. John worked for Craft Associates and later on he was employed by Kaminski Brothers Construction up until his retirement.

Outside of work, John was a devoted and supportive husband always willing to lend a helping hand. He coached Kingston Little League, founded and bowled in the Tuesday Night Chargers Bowling League, loved hunting and fishing with his buddies. John was a huge fan of the New York Football Giants and the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his loving wife Ellen, brother Lawrence, Georgia, son David and his wife Christine, Forty Fort, grand-daughter Marie, Florida and Lisa Check, Kingston. He was preceded in death by sisters Marie Rose, Barbara Carr, Irene Nelson, Betzy Kachmar and son Daniel J. Check.

The Check Family would like to extend a most sincere Thank You to the Staff at Third Avenue Health and Rehab where John last resided.

Friends and family are invited to attend the visitation on Saturday, September 19 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, Ltd., 568 Bennett Street, Luzerne.  A memorial service will be conducted at 9:00 a.m. by Rev. Kevin Miller.
